Over twenty-five years ago, after reading one of Christian Wideawake’s by-lines from the Rutland Herald, I commented to George Valley, “I wonder if Wideawake is a Native American surname?” George, raised in a Francophone family, did not speak English until he went to school. He said, “I bet it was Leveillé.”

Back in the days of the horse & buggy, the blacksmith shop was central to daily life. Horses needed shoes. Buggies needed wheels and springs. And all sorts of other household goods were forged by hand at the local smithy.

‘Scrappy’ Otter girls’ basketball team down but not out
Early on the visiting Otter Valley girls’ basketball team on Friday looked determined to take it to Middlebury, using tough man-to-man defense to force a batch of turnovers and a balanced attack to bolt to a 11-4 lead after one period.
Local athletes named 2022 football all-stars
Several members of the Otter Valley Union High School Division III football team, as well as members of the Division I Middlebury and Division III Mount Abraham-Vergennes football teams, were named all-stars in voting by the leagues’ coaches.
