BRANDON– Imagine throwing a flying disc in the cavernous Brandon Town Hall. Now you can! Martin Fjeld teamed up with the Brandon Recreation Department to put up a net and get 4 baskets to create a disc golf putting league this winter. Each Thursday evening from 7 to 9 pm, a group of up to 12 golfers meet to practice and perfect their short shots. Tosses range from 11 to 33 feet. Each player gets multiple attempts to score. Competition is fierce and fun so everyone is welcome to participate. Winners each week get a gift card to Red Clover Ale Company or Disc Golf Vermont swag (shirt or mini disc). Signup is free on the Brandon Rec website. The program runs through the end of March.
Usually an outdoor sport, the winter league is a chance for the participants to keep their game sharp. During the warmer weather, most play at the local Pittsford course. Disc golf is catching on across the country. There are 9,465 courses across the country, with 90% of them free to play. In 2022, over 1,100 new courses were built .
Fjeld, along with the Brandon Rec Department, is organizing a committee to investigate sites and hope to build a disc golf course in Brandon. There is talk of combining it with walking and biking trails.
