This device, believed to be a World War II-era Japanese hand grenade, was located in the basement of a West Rutland home on Sunday, May 8, 2022. The device was assessed by members of the Vermont State Police Bomb Squad, safely secured, and will be turned over to the Vermont National Guard for disposal at a later date.

WEST RUTLAND — In one of the more interesting police reports, State Police responded to a West Rutland resident’s call on Sunday, May 8 in which the person reported they had found a “potentially explosive device” while cleaning out their basement. Police responded to the scene where they found the resident had moved what appeared to be a hand grenade to their backyard.

Members of the Vermont State Police Bomb Squad secured the item, which will be turned over to the Vermont National Guard for disposal at a later date. Police said the item appears to be a World War II-era Japanese hand grenade. The item did not explode and does not pose a danger to the public, police reported, nor did they report why the grenade might have been in the basement.

Still, you just never know what you’ll find when spring-cleaning!
