Proctor softball ready for another run at finals

By RUSSELL JONES

After a disappointing loss in the championship game last season, Proctor’s softball team is ready for action. Head coach Abby Bennett said she will have a young team that is motivated to get back to the finals.

“They’re ready to work harder,” she said. “They know what they have to do and what they need to work on to get better.”

The Phantoms lost only one senior from last year and will have only one senior this season, but Bennett said the youngsters have a lot of grit.

“Our strength is really our defense,” Bennett said. “We’ll focus on that and timely hitting. We’re looking for solid hits, line drives. We are not looking for power, just base hits.”

The squad of 13 will feature Amanda Reynolds on the mound. Reynolds has decent velocity but is more focused on throwing strikes and letting the defense make plays behind her, Bennett said, adding that Lindsey Elms will also pitch when needed.

Bennett said they are looking forward to the challenge of the upcoming season and expects that they will face stiff competition from West Rutland and Mill River as well as Leland and Gray and Green Mountain. The goal, said Bennett, is the same as always — to capture the championship trophy
