Brandon Police Log: Domestic calls and erratic drivers

December 4

  • Officers responded to a 911 hang-up call on North Street.  The alarm was found to be false.
  • Brandon Police Department (BPD) responded to an untimely death/suicide at a residence on Forest Dale Road.  The death is under active investigation by BPD and the Vermont Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
  • A subpoena service was made on an individual residing on Ballantine Drive.  Subpoena was served in hand.
  • BPD responded to assist EMS with a lift assist at a residence on Wood Lane.
  • Vehicle stop on Franklin Street for failure to main travel lane.  Warning issued.
  • BPD stopped a vehicle on at the intersection of Franklin Street and Park Street for failure to obey a traffic control signal.  The officer observed signs of impairment in the driver along with open alcohol in the car.  The driver was charged with DUI-First Offense and was issued a citation to appear in the Rutland County Superior Court on 3/25/24 at 10 am for arraignment.
  • Vehicle stop on Franklin Street for failure to display license plate.  Warning issued.
  • BPD assisted Pittsford Police Department with an attempted home invasion on West Creek Road in Pittsford.
  • BPD received a report of ongoing harassment among students at Otter Valley Union High School (OV).

December 5

  • A resident of Stanton Road reported that a vehicle she had lent to a family member around Thanksgiving and still not been returned.  Incident under investigation.
  • Tractor-trailer stopped on Center Street because of an unsecured door that was swinging open.  Warning issued.
  • Vehicle stop on Arnold District Road for multiple traffic violations.  As a result of the stop, it was determined that the operator had a criminally suspended driver’s license.  The operator was issued a citation to appear before the Rutland County Superior Court on 3/4/24 at 10 a.m. for arraignment on the charge of Driving with a Criminally Suspended License.
  • Officers assisted the Castleton Police Department in transporting an individual to a residence in Brandon.
  • Vehicle stop on Franklin Street for failure to maintain travel lane.  Warning issued.
  • Vehicle stop on North Street for following too closely.  Warning issued.
  • Vehicle stop on Grove Street for failure to display license plates.  Warning issued.

December 6

  • BPD received a report that a vehicle had crashed into the Sanderson covered bridge on Pearl Street, and that the vehicle was on its side in the roadway.  Officers responded to the scene, along with Brandon Fire.  The driver was discovered to have two active warrants for his arrest and was taken into custody.  The driver was also found to have a civilly suspended license.  The driver was transported to the Addison County Courthouse for arraignment.  The cause of the crash was determined to be failure to yield to oncoming traffic and excessive speed.  No injuries were reported and the bridge sustained only minimal damage.
  • BPD responded to a residence on Furnace Road for a report of a suspicious person walking around the property.  No one was located in the area, but it is believed that the individual in question may have been from the power company.
  • Fingerprints taken for employment.
  • Vehicle stop on Park Street for failure to display plates.  Warning issued.
  • Vehicle stop on Grove Street for speeding.  Warning issued.
  • Vehicle stop on Mulcahy Drive for failure to maintain travel lane.  Warning issued.
  • Vehicle stop on Franklin Street for following too closely.  Warning issued.
  • Vehicle stop on Franklin Street for failure to maintain travel lane.  Warning issued.
  • Vehicle stop on Grove Street for failure to maintain travel lane.  Warning issued.
  • Vehicle stop on Park Street for failure to stop at a flashing red light.  Responding officer observed signs of impairment in the driver, who was subsequently arrested and charged with DUI-Second Offense.  Driver was issued a citation to appear in the Rutland County Superior Court on 2/20/24 at 10 a.m. for arraignment.

December 7

  • A lost dog was reported to have shown up at a residence on Forest Dale Road.
  • BPD received a complaint of a hit-and-run motor vehicle crash on Stanton Road.  Incident under investigation.
  • Vehicle stop on Franklin Street for expired inspection sticker.  Warning issued.
  • Vehicle stop on Franklin Street for expired inspection sticker.  Driver was found not to be licensed.  Ticket issued.
  • BPD responded to a report of a tractor-trailer that was stuck while attempting to turn around on Pearl Street near Corona Street.  The truck was gone when officers arrived.
  • BPD received a complaint about a car that had been parked on Park Street Extension for an extended period of time.  It was determined that the owner of the vehicle had permission to park in that location.
  • Vehicle stop on Grove Street for defective equipment.  Warning issued.
  • Vehicle stop on Grove Street for speeding.  Ticket issued.
  • Vehicle stop on Grove Street for defective equipment.  Warning issued.
  • Vehicle stop on Grove Street for speeding.  Ticket issued.
  • Vehicle stop on Grove Street for speeding.  Ticket issued.
  • Vehicle stop on Grove Street for defective equipment.  Warning issued.

December 8

  • Vehicle stop on Grove Street for failure to display license plates. Warning issued.
  • Vehicle stop on Franklin Street for speeding.  Warning issued.
  • Vehicle stop on McConnell Road for speeding.  Ticket issued.
  • A report was made to BPD about a suspicious male in the parking lot of Hannaford the day before.  The male was asking customers if they wanted to buy a Hannaford gift card from him.  Incident documented.
  • Vehicle stop on Park Street for speeding.  Ticket issued.
  • Vehicle stop on Arnold District Road for a moving violation.  Warning issued.
  • Vehicle stop on Franklin Street for a moving violation.  Warning issued.
  • Officers assisted a home-care provider with a patient on Union Street that had become defiant and walked out of the residence.  The patient was located and assisted back to the residence without any issues.
  • Officers responded to a motor-vehicle complaint on Grove Street for an erratic operator.  Officers were unable to locate the vehicle in question.

December 9

  • Property watch at the Heritage Family Credit Union on Franklin Street.
  • Foot patrol on Center Street.
  • Officers responded to a call from a residence on Grove Street for a report made by a man who said his wife had hit him and taken off from the residence in her vehicle.  Upon arrival, the officers spoke with the man and with the woman, who had returned.  After investigating the incident, the woman was arrested at the residence and transported to BPD for processing.  The suspect was released on a Flash Citation to appear in Rutland County Superior Court on 12/11/23 at 12:30 p.m. for arraignment on charges of Violation of Conditions of Release and Domestic Assault (Committed in the Presence of a Child).
  • BPD is investigating a stabbing at the Jiffy Mart on Grove Street on Saturday morning.  The incident is believed to be isolated and there is no danger to the public.
  • BPD investigating a credit card that was stolen at Otter Valley.
  • Police responded to a complaint of illegal parking on Briggs Lane.  BPD reminds the public that cars parked illegally are subject to civil infractions and/or towing.
  • BPD handled as mental-health crisis with an individual who was suicidal in the Brandon area.
  • BPD conducted a quarterly compliance review of the Sex Offender Registry.
  • Vehicle stop on Franklin Street for speeding.  Warning given, as the officer was requested at another call in progress.
  • Officers responded to Syndicate Road for a reported fight between at least six or seven people, some of whom were alleged to have firearms.  Upon arrival, it was found that there was no physical altercation.  The parties involved had left the area and the person remaining on the scene was identified.  No elements of a crime were observed and officers departed the scene.

December 10

  • Officers responded to a residence on Grove Street for a report from a man that his wife had thrown a dresser drawer at his head and that he may need medical treatment.  The responding officers were aware that the wife was prohibited from the residence pr court order.  After investigation, the woman was arrested and brought to BPD for processing.  She was ultimately transported to Marble Valley Correctional Facility and held without bail.  She was cited to appear in Rutland County Superior Court on 12/11/23 at 12:30 p.m. for arraignment.
  • Officers on routine patrol recovered a stolen vehicle on Carver Street with assistance from Rutland County Sheriff’s Department and the Pittsford Police Department.
  • Vehicle stop on Franklin Street after a report of an intoxicated driver.  The responding officer observed signs of intoxication and after investigation, the driver was arrested and charged with DUI-First Offense.  
  • A resident of Wood Lane requested information about keeping unwanted guests from trespassing at her property.
