Brandon Police Log: Difficult two weeks for BPD

May 22

  • The Brandon Police Department conducted a business property watch at Mallory’s Automotive on Forest Dale Road. 
  • A Notice of Hearing was served for the Rutland County Court on a resident living on West Seminary Street.  Notice served in hand.
  • An officer responded to a report of a dog left inside a car at the Hannaford’s parking lot. The dog was discovered to be okay, and the owner arrived shortly after. The officer spoke with the owner regarding leaving the dog inside the vehicle during warmer weather. 
  • Motor-vehicle stop on Park Street for driving after dark with no headlights.  Warning issued.
  • Brandon Police Department (BPD) conducted directed speed enforcement on Grove Street.  No violations were observed.
  • Foot patrol conducted on Center Street

May 23

  • Hold-up alarm activation reported at the Bar Harbor Bank on Park Street.  Alarm was determined to have been set off accidentally by an employee.
  • Motor Unit stopped a vehicle on Conant Square for using a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle. Ticket was issued to driver.
  • Motor Unit stopped a vehicle on Franklin Street for defective equipment.  Warning issued.
  • Motor-vehicle stop conducted on Grove Street for defective equipment.  The operator was issued a written warning for a non-operative headlight.
  • Motor-vehicle in downtown Brandon for failure to use headlights after dark.  It was discovered that the operator had an expired license.  The operator was issued a ticket for driving without a license.  The vehicle was later removed from the scene by a licensed operator.
  • Motor-vehicle stop was conducted on Grove Street.  The operator was issued a written warning for speeding.

May 24

  • BPD responded to Franklin Street for reports of an opossum that had been hit by a truck and was severely injured in the yard of a residence.  The animal was humanely put down and later removed from the scene by the Brandon Animal Control Officer.

May 25

  • Report of a commercial truck traveling southbound on Franklin Street with wire hanging off the back.  Franklin Street was checked up to the Pittsford line but the truck was not located.
  • BPD responded to reports of a juvenile driving an ATV dangerously on Union Street.  The juvenile was not located.
  • Officers conducted a welfare check on Pearl Street.  The subject was found to be ok and had been sleeping when officers made contact.
  • BPD responded to a verbal domestic dispute on Deer Run Road.  No physical violence was reported and after officers spoke with the caller, they left the residence without incident.
  • Officers responded to a motor-vehicle accident involving a pick-up truck on Richmond Road.  Investigation is ongoing.

May 26

  • BPD responded to Neshobe School for a report of a child who had left the school and was refusing to return.  The child was located on Newton Road and returned to the schoolwithout incident.
  • Brandon Police responded to a report of a log truck versus a pick-up truck motor vehicle crash near the intersection of Grove Street and Lovers Lane. The driver of the pick-up truck was found deceased at the scene. The operator of the tractor trailer log truck was uninjured. The crash is actively under investigation by the Brandon Police Department, Vermont State Police Crash Reconstruction Team, and the Vermont Department of Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement. The deceased has been identified as Alison Simmons, 21, of Burlington, VT.

May 27

  • BPD assisted VSP Crash Reconstruction Team investigating the fatal crash that occurred on Route 7 on May 26.
  • Caller made a report to BPD regarding a malnourished dog.  The case was forwarded to the Brandon Animal Control Officer.
  • BPD assisted the Vermont State Police with locating a vehicle that had rolled over in Leicester on Maple Run Road.  The vehicle, which was unoccupied, was located and the officer stood by until a trooper arrived on scene to investigate the crash.

May 28

  • BPD assisted Brandon Rescue with a man who was experiencing mental-health issues on Stanton Road. The man was transported to the hospital without incident.
  • An officer responded to a residence on North Street for an audible alarm.  Nothing was amiss when the officer checked the area.
  • In response to an alarm at the Neshobe School, BPD and Vermont State Police checked the building.  No suspicious activity was detected.
  • BPD received a call about a dog inside a vehicle on Park Street.  Officers responded to the area and determined that the car was left running for the dog’s benefit and that the dog seemed to be in good spirits.
  • An officer assisted the exchange of a juvenile during a custody dispute.
  • Officers responded to a single-vehicle motorcycle crash on Union Street that resulted in a fatality.  The deceased has been identified as Cory Munnett, 45, of Brandon. An investigation is ongoing.

May 29

  • BPD led the Brandon Memorial Day Parade.
  • An officer responded to reports of a dog left in the Hannaford parking lot on a hot day.  The officer was unable to locate any vehicle with a dog.
  • An officer helped a motorist with a disabled vehicle get in touch with towing services.
  • Officers responded to an alarm at Otter Valley Union High School.  It was discovered to be a false alarm and all persons located inside the building.
  • BPD conducted foot patrol on Center Street.

May 30

  • An officer on patrol in the area of Center Street observed a pickup truck that had pulled over to the side of the roadway after losing its load of plywood.  The operator was given a warning concerning the unsecured load he was hauling.
  • An officer received a report of a juvenile problem that occurred in the downtown area.  The parents of the juveniles were contacted and the matter was referred to the parents to resolve.
  • BPD conducted a property watch at Mallory’s Automotive.

May 31

  • Foot patrol conducted on Center Street.
  • Officer responded to reports of a cow in the road on Town Farm Road.  The cow vacated the road prior to the officer’s arrival.
  • An officer assisted in the exchange of information between two parties involved in a non-reportable crash that occurred in a parking lot.
  • Directed speed enforcement conducted on Arnold District Road.
  • Motor-vehicle stop conducted on Champlain Street for speeding.  Warning issued.
  • Vehicle stopped for speeding on Grove Street.  Warning issued.
  • Vehicle stopped for speeding on Grove Street.  Warning issued.
  • A silver/grey, 4-door sedan, with a paper registration crashed into a guard rail and retaining wall on North Street.  The operator fled the scene and the incident is under investigation.  Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call BPD.
  • BPD assisted Brandon Rescue with a medical call on River Street.
  • BPD served a Final Order Against Stalking on West Seminary Street.
  • BPD assisted Brandon Fire and Brandon Rescue with a medical call on Grove Street.

June 1

  • An officer assisted Brandon Rescue in gaining access to a home where the resident required medical assistance.
  • BPD responded to a residence on Furnace Road for a report of domestic assault between two family members.  As a result of the officers’ investigation, Celine Davis (28) of Rutland City was taken into custody.  Ms. Davis was subsequently charged with domestic assault and was issued a citation to appear before the Rutland Superior Court-Criminal Division on June 2, 2023 at 1 p.m. for arraignment on the aforementioned charge.
  • Late reporting by a parent of a possible assault at Otter Valley Union High School.  Investigation started.
  • BPD responded to an alarm at a business on Alta Woods.  The building’s inside perimeter was secure and the keyholders arrived on scene to lock the building back up.
  • BPD responded to a residence on Pearl Street for a motion-alarm activation.  Nothing suspicious was discovered by the officers.

June 2

  • Officer was asked to assist a disabled vehicle on Forest Dale Road.  Vehicle was gone by the time the officer arrived.
  • Vehicle stopped for speeding on Grove Street.  Ticket issued.
  • Vehicle stopped for speeding on Grove Street.  Ticket issued.
  • Vehicle stopped for stop-sign violation on Conant Square.
  • Vehicle stopped for moving violation on Forest Dale Road.  Warning issued.
  • Foot patrol in downtown.
  • Police received call about the smell of urine emanating from an apartment on Mulcahy Drive.  The matter is being handled by property management.
  • Fingerprints taken for employment.
  • Officer responded to reports of a disabled vehicle on Lovers Lane.  Vehicle was gone when officer arrived.
  • Officers responded to Carver Street to conduct a welfare check.  Citizen was given a courtesy ride back to residence.
  • Officers responded to welfare check on North Street.  Citizen was transported to Porter Hospital by Brandon Rescue.
  • BPD helped Rutland County Sheriff to locate a lost item on the side of the road on Forest Dale Road.
  • BPD responded to reports of domestic violence at a residence on River Street.  Because of conflicting accounts of what transpired, no enforcement action was taken.

June 3

  • Traffic hazard removed on Richmond Road.
  • Police attended Brandon Extravaganza at Estabrook Park.
  • Complaint was made at BPD of damage to a vehicle on Forest Dale Road.  Incident was determined to be civil in nature and no police response was needed.
  • Police responded to call regarding car crash by Brandon House of Pizza on Center Street.  However, no crash was observed when officers arrived.  BPD asks that anyone with information about such an event contact them.
  • BPD responded to report of 2 dogs loose on Neshobe Golf Course.  The dogs were known to the Animal Control Officer and BPD as being aggressive.  The animals were ultimately returned to their owner.
  • BPD responded to the call of a male who was believed to be on drugs behind the Junction Deli in Forestdale.
  • A welfare check was conducted on Town Farm Road.
  • BPD responded to a report of an infant who locked himself in a vehicle on Wood Lane.  By the time the officer arrived, the child had unlocked the door and the officer left the residence without further incident.
  • BPD assisted Vermont State Police-New Haven in securing a scene in Leicester where an individual had committed what was believed to be a suicide.

June 4

  • Officers assisted Brandon Rescue with man having trouble breathing on High Pond Road.
  • Officers responded to residence on North Street where a man was reportedly on drugs and acting strangely.  The man denied medical assistance and left the residence without incident.
  • A vehicle was stopped on Franklin Street on suspicion of DUI after they had failed to turn their vehicle properly.  The operator was found to be sober.
  • During a traffic stop related to speeding, a vehicle failed to move over for a stopped police car that had its blue emergency lights activated.  The officer terminated the initial traffic stop and conducted a stop on the vehicle that failed to move over.  That operator was issued a ticket.
  • Officers responded to a report of a suspicious person in the woods in the area of Steinberg Road.  The person of interest was located and it was determined that they were looking for a missing cat.  The lost cat was ultimately found.
  • A resident of Pine Tree Drive came into the BPD seeking guidance on how to go about dealing with bears getting into his trash cans.  The subject was given the contact info for Vermont Fish & Wildlife so that he could seek their advice.
  • Officers responded to a domestic disturbance on Basin Road.  Investigation ongoing.
  • The Shelburne PD requested an agency assist from BPD in attempting to serve an individual with a citation on Maple Street.  It was later determined that the individual no longer lived at that address.
  • BPD assisted the Vermont State Police with reports of shots fired at a residence on Route 7 in Leicester.  The responding officers helped in securing the scene as well as in providing medical assistance to one of the victims.  The case is presently being investigated as a homicide by Vermont State Police.  Please see the related story in this week’s issue.
