Chamber announces scholarship winner, new opportunities for area students

The Brandon Area Chamber of Commerce Scholarship is awarded annually to a student or students who are well-rounded, have participated in school and outside activities, who are pursuing higher education and have participated in activities that make Brandon and other communities a better place to live, work and play.

The executive director for the Chamber, Bernie Carr, said this year’s recipient has shown an extraordinary work ethic along with academic excellence and involvement in extra-curricular activities. Carr announced the Chamber’s 2019 scholarship winner is Kexin “Cathy” Qian.

“She is an independent, engaged and enthusiastic learner,” Carr said. “In her senior year she developed a passion for business management and the entrepreneurial mindset and studied personal finance, general management, finance and economics.”

Carr said Cathy’s goal is to join a business and instill efficiencies that help bring the company more success in the future and she plans to attend college, studying General Management in Ohio.

And because it’s never too early to start looking for scholarship opportunities, there is a new opportunity for Brandon area students to earn money for college, with the A-1 Auto Transport scholarship.

A-1 Auto Transport is a car shipping operation in Vermont that has extended an opportunity to all qualified students in Brandon and its surrounding areas that would like to earn scholarship money. Scholarship programs include yearly payouts of $250, $500 or $1,000 to the student’s school.

For eligibility to enter, students must have current enrollment at any accredited college, university or trade school and a GPA of 3.0 or higher is also required.

If interested in the scholarship through A-1, students may write out an essay in 1,000 words or more about a topic relevant to the auto transport industry. The company asks that essays are not plagiarized or published online.

Student can send their essays to scholarships@a1autotransport.com by March 10, 2020. Students should include their essays, full name, phone number, mailing address, email address, and school name. The A-1 Scholarship Committee will review all entries and post the winners on the website at the end of March 2020. Winning students are also notified through email.
