At a Brandon Selectboard meeting last year, a resident set off a minor firestorm when they said Brandon was becoming “Disneyland.” The comment was meant to be critical of Brandon’s emphasis on fun activities, but many Brandonites took it as a compliment.
Names lost in Vermont, Part 42: Goodheart, Gokey, and Greeno
This round of alliterative surnames started with recollections of my late Mayflower Society friend, “Mrs. Cecil Goodheart,” née Helen Clara Churchill, who lived at 61 Park Street in Brandon.

The Hill Cemetery in Sudbury stands on a bluff just north of the town green, on the west side of Route 30. It’s a breathtaking location, with sweeping westward views of the Champlain Valley and the Adirondacks beyond.

State Champions! West Rutland battles Proctor down to the wire, 57-56
The West Rutland Golden Horde girl’s basketball team won the school’s second state championship in Division IV girls basketball in the past four years by defeating rival Proctor, 57-56, at the Barre Auditorium this past Saturday.
Otters oust Oxbow, 69-38, in state playdown opener
The Otter Valley Otters ladies basketball team defeated the Oxbow Olympians, 69-37, on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at the House of Noise in the first round of the Vermont State Tournament.
Proctor girls handle OV, 57–42
In one of the more entertaining county games in many years, the Phantom Proctor girls ran their record to an impressive 14-1 with a solid 57-42 win over their neighbors to the north, Otter Valley Union High School, on Wednesday night, February 16.
Mt. Abraham cruises past Otter boys in nail-biter, 57-42
The Mount Abraham boys basketball team took a trip down Route 7 for a clash with Otter Valley in a Saturday afternoon matinee at the “House of Noise” and used their size and speed to claim the win, 57-42.
Otter Valley wins on Senior Night
The Otter women welcomed the Wasps of Woodstock to Senior Night at the “House of Noise” on Friday, February 11 before a raucous crowd.
