Not quite Irene, but certainly bad enough!

By GEORGE FJELD

SNOWMELT CAME DOWN off the mountains in the heavy rain and warm temperatures, filling the Neshobe River and Otter Creek. While not as damaging as the flooding in July, towns around Vermont experienced inundated downtowns again. Fortunately, Brandon’s flood-mitigation infrastructure under Center Street kept the water in check.

BRANDON–About 2.5 inches of rain fell on Brandon and surrounding towns from Sunday into Monday and many townspeople were remembering Tropical Storm Irene. The Neshobe River threatened many roads, and some including Wheeler Road, Stone Mill Dam Road, and Union Street were closed Monday (and open again by Tuesday morning). Thankfully, Route 7 remained passable. Even with four feet of water going over the falls, the new overflow channel under Center Street was functioning perfectly allowing the water to flow freely underneath the tarmac and not through any buildings. Barnes Flats on Route 73 in front of the Brandon Police Department was flooded, as was much of Neshobe Golf Course next to the river. The work on the Neshobe River off Newton Road had its intended effect with no washing out as of 10pm Monday.
