SUMMARY:Concert: 'The Beauty We Love'
DESCRIPTION:Grammy Award-winning cellist Eugen Friesen and singer/songwriter Elizabeth Rogers present an evening of creative music. \n“The Beauty We Love” will be an intimate evening from 7:30–9:30 p.m. concert featuring:\nEugene Friesen\, a graduate of the Yale School of Music\, has toured the world as a soloist and as a member of the Paul Winter Consort with whom he’s recorded over 20 CDs\, four of which won Grammy Awards. He is a trailblazer on the cello\, his innovative improvisational style and original techniques – and twenty years teaching at the Berklee College of Music in Boston – have influenced generations of players. Friesen’s program\, including sounds and ideas drawn from travels on six continents\, features a diverse repertoire that includes his original music\, J.S. Bach\, electronics\, natural soundscapes\, and the poetry of Rumi to paint a portrait of a world united in hope. \nElizabeth Rogers sings stories of the large and small themes that run through a human life. Her voice – which has been compared to Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell – has a delicacy\, clarity\, and purity that perfectly underscores her insightful lyrics. \n$20. 117 West Street Rutland.

SUMMARY:Martha Molnar @ Phoenix Books Rutland
DESCRIPTION:Please join us from 6:30–8 p.m. for an evening with Vermont author Martha Molnar for a discussion of her new book Playing God in the Meadow. \n\n\n\n\nAfter decades of fantasizing and saving\, of working multiple jobs and embracing frugality in the midst of Manhattan\, Martha Leb Molnar and her husband had found their parcel of land. Determined to turn an overgrown and unproductive Vermont apple orchard into a thriving and beautiful landscape\, they decided to restore this patch of land to a pristine meadow and build a safe haven for their family and nearby wildlife. \n\n\n\n\nOnce they cleared the gnarled and dying trees away\, Molnar was forced to wage war on the invasive species\nthat had sprung up around the property. Propelled by the heated debates surrounding non-native species and\nher own complicated family history and migration\, she was driven to research the Vermont landscape\, turning to scientific literature\, experts in botany and environmental science\, and locals who have long tended the land in search of answers. \n\n\n\n\nAt turns funny\, thoughtful\, and conversational\, Playing God in the Meadow follows this big city transplant as she learns to make peace with rural life and an evolving landscape that she cannot entirely control. \n\n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to all\, but advance registra- tion is appreciated. Please register below. \nCopies of Playing God in the Meadow will be available for sale at the event. Can’t make it to the event but still want to purchase a signed\, personalized copy? Please call 802-855-8078. Signed copies will be available after the event on April 4th. If you ordered a book for store pick up\, we will contact you as soon as it’s ready. If you ordered a book with shipping\, please allow an addition- al 7-10 days for delivery.

SUMMARY:Castleton University Theater Arts Department Presents The IT Girl
DESCRIPTION:Castleton University Theater Arts Department pres- ents its spring musical\, The IT Girl at Casella Theater from Thursday\, March 23\, through Saturday March 25 at 7 p.m. and Sunday\, March 26\, at 2 p.m. at Casella Theater. \n\n\n\n\nBetty Lou Spence is a shop girl who falls in love with her boss\, initially winning him over because she has the illusive quality\, IT. When class differences divide Betty from her beau\, she triumphs by putting her sense of justice — and her special charms — to good use. \nInspired by the language and melodies of the silent movie era\, and based on the 1927 Paramount Picture\, IT\, the new musical offers today’s audiences a light-hearted escape from life’s complexities – just as silent films once gave to audiences in the Roaring ’20s. \nTickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors\, students\, fac- ulty\, staff\, and alumni. Tickets can be purchased or reserved by contacting the Casella Theater Box Office from Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at (802) 468-1119. \nView Online: http://castleton. meritpages.com/news/Castle ton-University-Theater-Arts- Department-Presents-The-IT- Girl-March-23-26/34048

SUMMARY:Dover Quartet & Pianist Haochen Zhang
DESCRIPTION:Concert Program In- cludes Brahms and a Newly-Commissioned Premiere by Marc Neikrug. The cel- ebrated Dover String Quartet joins forces with award-winning Chinese pianist Hao- chen Zhang at the Mahaney Arts Center on Friday\, March 10 to perform the Vermont premiere of a new work by contemporary American composer Marc Neikrug\, as well as Johannes Brahms’ Piano Quintet in F minor\, Op. 34. \n\n\n\n\nThe Middlebury College Performing Arts Series is committed to supporting the future of chamber music\, in part\nby commissioning new works. Marc Neikrug’s Piano Quintet No. 2\, subtitled “In Six Parts\,” is designed to highlight the virtuosity of each individual musician. This work is a co- commission with Music Accord\, a consortium of major presenting organizations throughout the United States. Performing Arts Series Director Allison Coyne Carroll feels that this new work is especially compelling for students to hear\, because it stresses the principles of harmony just as they enter a complex world where they’ll soon contribute their individual skills. Composer Marc Neikrug noted\, “It demands engaged emotional understanding and great ensemble. Because of the independence of the parts\, everyone needs to be aware of what everyone else is playing at all times.” \nThe concert by the Dover Quartet and Haochen Zhang will take place at the Mahaney Arts Center’s Olin C. Robison Concert Hall on Friday\, March 10\, 2023 at 7:30 PM ET. Tickets are $25 for the general public\, $20 for Middlebury faculty/staff and alumni\, $10 for youth\, and $5 for Middlebury College stu- dents. Vaccinations and boosters (or valid medical or religious exemptions) are required; masks are option- al\, except under certain circumstances\, but welcome. The Mahaney Arts Center is located on the campus of Middlebury College\, at 72 Porter Field Road\, just off Route 30 south/S. Main Street. Free parking is available curbside on Rt. 30 or in the MAC parking lot\, in rows marked faculty/staff/visitors. The concert will also be streamed\, with a 48-hour window for playback. Streaming tickets are $15\, or $5 for students. For tick- ets\, health and safety protocols\, or information\, call (802) 443-MIDD (6433) or go to http://www.middlebury. edu/arts.
