The tour starts with an orientation at the Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site in Hubbardton. Meet there at 10:00 a.m. with your own vehicle. The tour will make various stops along the way\, ending at 1:00 p.m. in Center Rutland. \nThe 11th annual driving tour is hosted by Jim Rowe\, historian of the Crown Point Road Association. Tickets are $4.00 for adults\, free for children under 15\, and include admission to the Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site. \nThe Hubbardton Battlefield is located at 5696 Monument Hill Road. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places\, it is the site of the only Revolutionary War battle fought in Vermont. SUMMARY:“The Power of Insect Pheromones: Then and Now”
DESCRIPTION:At the Sheldon Museum beginning at 12 pm\, Greg Pask will present this lecture. Pask is an insect neurobiologist in the Biology Department at Middlebury College\, where he works to understand how ants and fireflies communicate with each other through smell. This talk will discuss the rich history of insect pheromone research\, its connections to modern agricultural practices\, and the current insect pheromone research at Middlebury College. Insects communicate with each other through secret chemical messages for mating and other purposes. Beginning with early theories of pheromone communication by French Entomologist Jean-Henri Fabre\, modern insect pheromones have utility in both basic and applied sciences. \nThe Sheldon thanks Table 21 for supporting the Summer Fridays Series. The talk will take place in the Sheldon’s barn and is free and open to the public. Seating is limited; first come\, first served. Bring a brown bag lunch if you’d like. DESCRIPTION:Starting at 4 pm at the Federated Church in Rochester. The afternoon concert features the well-known Heliand with guest percussionist Thomas Kozumplik. Heliand’s 15th anniversary season draws to a close with a compelling new program for oboe\, bassoon and piano called “Cool of the Day.” Continuing their mission to make classical music meaningful and accessible through purposeful programming and vivacious performances\, Heliand combines music of Franz Josef Haydn\, Jenni Brandon\, Padma Newsom\, Clémence de Grandval\, and Chick Corea. They will also present the world premiere of “Nuts”\, a piece commissioned by Heliand from composer Molly Leach. DESCRIPTION:Come Alive Outside and Partners for Prevention are celebrating the magical wellness benefits of nature with Harry Potter-themed activities and events at Rotary Park in Rutland. \nFrom 10am–1pm\, wizards\, witches and muggles of all ages can delight in free activities led by community organizations and businesses. Make your own wand\, create a horcrux or even play a game of water-balloon quidditch. Would-be wizards can also walk the muggle mile and see how many items on the marauder’s map they can find. Costumes are encouraged for everyone\, and the best costume will win a prize at the end of the event. There is no entry fee for participants. Food trucks will be on hand to serve hungry Hogwarts houses and butter beer will flow freely. Just a note: the butter beer is non-alcoholic\, meaning that it is “beer” in name only\, so kids can have a cup or two. Food and beverages are an additional fee. This event is rain or shine. SUMMARY:Talk at the Sheldon Museum: Chasing Butterflies: American Artists’ Pursuit of Natural History
DESCRIPTION:Professor Ellery Foutch will present “Chasing Butterflies: American Artists’ Pursuit of Natural History\,” a talk that explores artists’ pursuit of butterflies and their experimentations with representations that capture not just their intricate wing patterns but their symbolic associations as well. Why have so many artists\, from the early nineteenth century to today\, been drawn to butterflies and moths? Titian Ramsay Peale (1799-1885) created hundreds of sketches and oil paintings of the insects\, and his elaborate specimen boxes display butterflies arranged in dazzling patterns between panes of glass. Painter Willard Metcalf spent his evenings catching moths with a lantern\, saving his specimens in plaster-and-glass mounts that he stored within the drawers of his natural history cabinet. Contemporary artist Margarita Cabrera hand-crafts copper monarch butterflies\, evoking migrations and exchanges between the U.S. and Mexico. Foutch will include other examples at the talk on July 15. \nThe talk will take place in the Sheldon’s barn and is free and open to the public. Seating is limited; first come\, first served. One of the finest short stories by John Gardner\, author of “Grendel” and “Vlempk the Box Painter\,” “The Joy of the Just” will be adapted and performed by master reader and Artistic Director Ethan Bowen. Accompanying Bowen will be pianist Susan Bushnell and a mini church choir.
