SUMMARY:Area 802 in Rutland Features Aliens\, Abductions
DESCRIPTION:Come Alive Outside and Partners for Prevention have created an out-of-this-world trail walk and community party at Pine Hill Park this Halloween season. The alien-themed event called ”Area 802” begins with trick-or-treating and spooky stories for kids at 4 p.m. At 6 p.m.\, the spooky trail for teens and adults begins. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis year\, the trail centers around a real-life mystery in Pine Hill Park. In the 1930s\, F.B.I. were spotted in the area\, leading some to question what the G-men were doing there. Rumors began to fly about gangsters\, kidnappings\, and extortion plots\, yet residents were never told why the FBI had come to their town. Reflecting on the case\, some modern-day sleuths think that perhaps their presence was related to U.F.Os. \n“This historical mystery about the F.B.I was the inspiration behind our spooky trail\,” says program manager Haley Rice. “What if the F.B.I discovered extraterrestrials in Pine Hill Park? What if the disappearances kept happening? These were all great ideas to explore as we put together our story.” \nMore community partners will be on hand to celebrate the Halloween season with giveaways\, music\, and candy. “We’re creating a party atmosphere before and after the trail. There’s a little something for everyone\,” said Come Alive Outside Executive Director Arwen Turner. \nThis free event is at Pine Hill Park in Rutland\, Vermont\, on October 28. The non-spooky trail for kids and scared adults begins at 4 p.m. The spooky trail and community party begins at 6 and lasts until 9 p.m. \nA reservation is requested. The trail contains dips\, rocks\, and roots. Though it will be lit\, patrons are cautioned that there is a risk of injury on the trail. SUMMARY:Middlebury College Theatre Department presents Rhinoceros by Eugene Ionesco
DESCRIPTION:MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College Department of Theatre will present Martin Mooney’s adaptation of Ionesco’s Rhinoceros\, directed by Jay Dunn. It is the first offering in a season dedicated to examining the stories we tell in order to survive. \nWritten by Eugene Ionesco as a thinly-veiled clap-back at the rise of fascism in Europe\, this quasi-allegorical dark satire about a political pandemic stretches towards its bookend a century later as the rise of authoritarianism and post-fascism again rears its ugly head in our global political systems. \nAn outbreak of rhinoceritis stampedes through Anytown\, USA\, quickly becoming a pandemic that turns its citizenry into a savage herd of “rhinoceri.” All of them\, that is\, except for Bérenger\, who refuses to relinquish his humanity. \nIn this dire comic vision of civilization run amok\, Ionesco depicts the struggle of the individual to maintain integrity and dignity alone in a world where all others have succumbed to the primal thrill of brute force and the mindlessness of the mob. \nA play and playwright typically described as absurdist\, Rhinoceros finds a new\, terrifying resonance in our collective experience of the COVID-19 pandemic\, where the story of an ideology defeated decades ago finds its historical rhyme in a contagious\, deadly virus killing millions right now. \nWhile once contemporary audiences could comfortably watch a comedy about other people in another time\, Rhinoceros in 2022 reflects the horror of nature\, and our own natures\, clawing modern humanity back onto the food chain. \nRhinoceros will be performed on Thursday\, October 27 through Saturday\, October 29 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday\, October 29 at 2 p.m. in the Seeler Studio Theatre in the Mahaney Arts Center on the campus of Middlebury College. \nThe production is open to the public\, and spectators must be vaccinated. Please join us for a post-show discussion following the Friday evening performance. The show runs approximately 100 minutes with one intermission. \nTickets are $15 for the general public; $10 for Middlebury College faculty\, staff\, alums\, emeriti\, and other ID card holders; $8 for youth (under 21); and $5 for Middlebury College students. For tickets or information\, call (802) 443-6433 or go to https://middlebury.universitytickets.com/. \nThe Mahaney Arts Center is located at 72 Porter Field Road in Middlebury\, just off Route 30 South. Free parking is available.

SUMMARY:Bees Besieged: A History of Beekeeping
DESCRIPTION:“The bees are the color; everything else is black and white\,” said Bridport beekeeper Kirk Webster. Beekeeping goes back 10\,000 years\, but bees have been much in the news recently as a multi-pronged scourge has devastated many of the nation’s 2.5 million colonies. Meanwhile\, hobby beekeeping has grown exponentially. \nBill Mares\, writer\, and beekeeper for 45 years\, will tell of the origins and evolution of beekeeping\, sometimes referred to as “farming for intellectuals\,” with a particular emphasis on his research in Vermont. \nThis talk is free\, open to the public\, and accessible to those with disabilities.\nSalisbury Meeting House\, 853 Maple St.\, Salisbury\, Thursday\, October 27\, 2022\, at 7 p.m. Hosted jointly by the Salisbury Historical Society and the Salisbury Conservation Commission Bees Besieged: A History of Beekeeping is a Vermont Humanities program supported in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

SUMMARY:Nosferatu at Brandon Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:Get into the Halloween spirit with a classic silent horror film celebrating the 100th anniversary of its release. Nosferatu (1922)\, the first screen adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula\, will be shown with live music on Saturday\, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Brandon Town Hall and Community Center\, 1 Conant Square\, Route 7 in Brandon. Admission is free\, and donations are welcome to help support ongoing Town Hall renovation efforts. \nThe screening will feature live accompaniment by Jeff Rapsis\, a New Hampshire-based composer who specializes in creating music for silent cinema. \nNosferatu (1922)\, directed by German filmmaker F.W. Murnau\, remains a landmark of the cinematic horror genre. It was among the first movies to use visual design to convey unease and terror. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe passage of time has made this unusual film seem even more strange and otherworldly to modern viewers. It’s an atmosphere that silent film accompanist Jeff Rapsis will enhance by improvising live music on the spot for the screening. \n“The original Nosferatu is a film that seems to get creepier as more time goes by\,” said Rapsis\, a resident of Bedford\, N.H.\, who accompanies silent film screenings at venues across the nation. “It’s a great way to celebrate Halloween and the power of silent film to transport audiences to strange and unusual places.” \nFor more about the music\, visit www.jeffrapsis.com.

SUMMARY:Marble Museum Open House
DESCRIPTION:The Vermont Marble Museum and the Preservation Trust of Vermont [PTV] invite the public to an open house and exhibition at the historic home of the Vermont Marble Company\, 52 Main Street in Proctor\, on October 15 from 4-7 p.m. \nThe public can enjoy films\, artifacts\, and food before the Museum moves and refines the collection into a new space within the historic marble complex in the coming months. \nFor many in the Marble Valley\, the Vermont Marble Company’s plant and the exhibition has been well-visited cultural\, historical\, and industrial landmarks. \nIn 2012\, when the building and museum collections were at risk of being sold piecemeal\, the Preservation Trust of Vermont stepped in to purchase the building and its collections and moved to secure the museum’s future. With their successful purchase of much of the collection and the historic marble exhibit\, PTV helped usher in the non-profit Vermont Marble Museum to advocate for the collection and the building’s long-term preservation. \nWith careful management and plans to respect the site’s historic buildings\, Zion Growers will begin the reuse of the building as part of their fiber-based hemp processing. This new use is a compatible one that honors and continues the industrial use of this historic mill complex. \nThe Preservation Trust of Vermont will continue to own the collections\, maintain a 99-year lease for the museum’s benefit\, and co-hold a protective historic preservation easement on the entire building in partnership with the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board. \nAt the October 15 event and moving forward\, the Vermont Marble Museum welcomes the community to share its thoughts and insights about the direction that the retooled museum and its future programming should take and how it can become a more meaningful community cultural institution; one that recognizes both the past and present roles of marble in the valley\, and works to tell the stories of the people who have labored here for centuries in the marble trades.

SUMMARY:Woods Walk to highlight 50 years of intensive hardwood management
DESCRIPTION:Join the Vermont Woodlands Association for a Woods Walk on Saturday\, October 15. The walk will highlight the over 50 years of intensive hardwood management at Hawkes Tree Farm in Woodstock. The property is owned and managed by Gerry Hawkes. \nMr. Hawkes has practiced intensive hardwood management on his 43-acre property since he purchased it in 1969. Mr. Hawkes will lead the walk and share the work done on the property through the years and its successful results. The work has transformed the property from being overstocked with low-quality trees to a healthier woodland with well-spaced\, high-quality timber. \nMr. Hawkes is a professional forester who\, in the past\, has managed about 30\,000 acres for private clients in Vermont and served as a consultant on USAID\, World Bank\, and United Nations projects in Africa and Asia. \nThe event will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and take place rain or shine\, so attendees are encouraged to dress appropriately in good hiking shoes. Hawkes Tree Farm is located at 796 Wayside Road \n\n\n\n\n\n\nExtension\, Woodstock\, VT 05091. Since GPS is not always reliable in getting to the tree farm\, detailed directions are listed below.\nFrom Woodstock:\nTake Route 12 North out of Woodstock. Set an odometer at the iron-sided bridge on the edge of town. Go approximately 3.5 miles on Route 12. Look for Wayside Road\, a gravel road on the left\, which immediately crosses a small brook next to Route 12. The first place you will see on this road is the former River Bend garden center in a green-roofed barn with greenhouses in the back. \nAfter about a mile\, the town road will cross a dam on a pond. Keep going straight on Wayside Road Ext. Go approximately one mile up this road (do NOT turn right after the pond). Where the town road takes a sharp left\, you continue straight through a gap in the stone walls where the #796 and the name Gerry Hawkes are on a mailbox. Go by the log piles\, and we will park and meet in front of the 4-bay shop. \nFrom Bethel: \nTake Route 12 South by Silver Lake and Barnard General Store. From Barnard General Store\, continue about 6 miles south on Route 12. Look for Wayside Road\, a gravel road on the right\, which immediately crosses a small brook next to Route 12. The first place you will see on this road is the former River Bend garden center in a green-roofed barn with greenhouses in the back. \nAfter about a mile\, the town road will cross a dam on a pond.
